I don't know if you were overweight as a teenager, but I know I was. I was one of the kids who endured the absolute hell of all the humiliating taunting and teasing of my being a fat teenager. Those cruel 'fat remarks' like "here comes tons of fun" still echo in my ears. The tragedy for overweight teenagers is that it doesn't just hurt then, the pain continues for a lifetime. Finding and following a good diet for teens is simply healthy for every aspect of life.
So what diet plan for a teenager works? What should you look for in a good diet for teens? You of course must eat the right foods, but a successful diet consists of much more than what we actually put in our mouths. It consists of several things.
1). Set a realistic goal - Would ten pounds be the magic weight or more; set a definite weight loss goal. Get your teenager involved in the goal setting process. Remember, the teen years are a heavy growth time, and it is essential to have proper nutrition for optimum health. Setting a realistic goal is critical to success when choosing a good diet for teens.
2). Create a Realistic Diet Plan For a Teenager - Get clear in your mind and in your teen's mind about what will happen on the diet each day and each week. Realize the environment kids are in most of the time. Their life is dominated by schedules and various evaluations. A good diet for teens should be no different. Make out a realistic diet plan for your teenager consisting of daily, weekly and monthly goals. There should also be scheduled times for weighing and measuring, but just as important, their needs to be a time for rewards. The rewards don't have big or monetary, but it should be something that the teen believes is a reward.
3). Have a Support Group - I am not talking about going to weight watchers here. I am talking about loving caring people who realize that being overweight to a teenager is extremely serious. Weight loss is something your teen desperately wants to achieve, and everyone around her should be supportive of that goal. No matter what goal your teen is striving for, if there is family and friend support, his chances for success literally soar.
4). A Motivational Board - Get some magazines on topics that the teenager is interested in. Find pictures of athletes with the body shape that your teen most admires. It would be great to include pictures of others who have benefited from a good diet for teens. Cut and paste these pictures on a simple poster board. Write and paste motivational affirmations on the board as well. The affirmations could be something like, "I'm exactly at my perfect weight today". Write the affirmations in the present tense. Place the board where it is the first thing seen in the morning and the last thing seen at night.
5). Find A Physical Activity - Find an activity, anything that gets them moving...walking, jogging, swimming. They don't have to become an Olympian, but it should be fun and they should do it for a minimum of 20 minutes 3-4 times a week.
The Final piece of the puzzle when choosing a good diet for teens is to have them begin eating a healthy, balanced nutritious diet. Of course, have them avoid eating the known foods that will add to their fat problem. Forget the quick weight loss fad diets; they are risky and they just plain don't work over time. They will only compound the problem! It just makes no sense to do everything else right and then totally blow any chance for success by eating an unhealthy diet.
A good diet for teens consists of establishing a diet and exercise foundation during the early teen years that will not only ward off weight problems for your teen now but will also ensure that chances for them to ever be overweight are "slim".
